Recommended Commentaries
Dale Allison, James in A Critical and Exegetical Commentary. The strengths of this commentary are that it is up-to-date and quite thorough, with an added emphasis on how James has influenced theology and Culture.
Craig Blomberg and Marion Kamell, James, in Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the NT. This recent commentary also deals with the structure analysis of James and of each passage.
Luke Timothy Johnson, The Letter of James, in the Anchor Bible. This commentary is from a Roman Catholic writer who you would never know is Catholic, and excels in the history of interpretation of James the man and his epistle.
J.B. Mayor, The Epistle of St. James. An old classic that deserves that title, and is very thorough on the Greek text and on the impact of James in the Apostolic Fathers.
Doug Moo, The Letter of James, in the Pillar NT Commentary. Probably the best all round commentary for the preacher and teacher of James.
