Need to learn German for graduate programs? I highly recommend Erasmus Academy’s online seminar course in German. I took this course in the summer of 2012 and it was one of the best language courses I’ve taken. This year in runs May 18-July 8 (8 weeks total). The deadline to sign up is May 1. If you do take the course, please remember to tell the professor that Todd Scacewater referred you.
I was apprehensive at first to take it online, but the experience was enjoyable and effective. The professor has 6 years of graduate work at a German university; 10 years of teaching the intensive German course to graduate students in NYC area; and 6 years of online teaching experience. He’s an excellent instructor, and a good guy.
The 8-week course meets online in real-time through a “webinar” website twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays), 6:15pm-9:15pm EST; it comprises 48 hours of instruction. Expect to spend about 30 hours a week studying in order not to fall behind on exercises and vocab (you learn around 1,500 vocab words, almost all of which I have retained through my flashcard app; I’m thankful for the class’s stress on piles of vocab). If you’re unsure, you’re able to sit in for (I think) a couple classes to get a feel for it and decide at that point if you want to continue.
The class uses a textbook that focuses on more scientific language than theological language, and near the end we got into literary texts (e.g., Kafka), but I was able to read theological German quite well after finishing. He is also able to send a performance review to any school that requires something of that nature for proof of taking the class.
