To celebrate a successful month this March, we’ve decided to create a book giveaway contest. We’re giving away one free, new copy of Paul Glenn’s Introduction to Philosophy (Catholic Way, 2014).
We here at Exegetical Tools want to bring you the latest resources for biblical studies, but we’re also bringing on another contributor (to be announced soon) to help educate about basic resources in different areas of philosophy. Many biblical scholars, pastors, and students feel daunted by the thought of learning philosophy and many do not know where to begin, but philosophy has always been used in biblical studies (think of Baur, Bultmann, etc.) and a basic grasp on the field is helpful to understand the history of biblical studies as well. We’ll be creating annotated bibliographies for different subjects in philosophy and posting Book Reviews and Featured Resources for the best philosophy books for you to have on your shelves.
This is the beginning of that effort. Paul Glenn’s work gives around 130 pages of history of philosophy, beginning with the Greeks and moving to the modern period. He then looks at various issues in philosophy such as metaphysics (the nature of being), epistemology (nature of knowledge), ethics, and more. This would be a good book to begin skimming through to get a grip on the basic issues in philosophy. We’ll be posting some Featured Resources soon on the best histories of philosophies available (mostly multi-volume sets), so this one could get you started in the mean-time.
