frame-history-philosophyJohn Frame is well-known in the Reformed camp. He’s written extensively on the doctrine of God, of the word of God, and other related theological topics. This nearly 1,000 page tome is certainly a gem.

I’ve listened to Frame’s lectures on the history of philosophy and he does well. I’ve read through W. T. Jones’ History of Western Philosophy and listened to classes on the same topic by various scholars, my favorite Christian scholar being Ronald Nash (a “history of ideas” kind of guy). Frame’s lectures fared well when compared to other scholars covering the same topic.

The idea behind this volume is the familiar “noetic effects of sin” idea, utilized heavily by van Til and Frame and others in the Reformed tradition. Philosophy is an attempt to find truth by sheer reason apart from revelation, which is tainted by sin. Frame in this volume traces the ideas of philosophy and evaluates them via the theology of the Bible. He has surely done a service for all students, pastors, and even scholars not acquainted with philosophy by bringing another well-informed Christian perspective to the history of Western philosophy.
